Asheville Awesomeness II

After a lovely Thanksgiving with family and friends, it was off to Asheville, NC for a long, relaxing weekend.

We made sure our stay at "Slow Living Cottage" lived up to it's name! We soaked in the hot tub and bathed in the glow of the moon. The stars were incredible! We ate like kings. We read like bookworms.

Who knew chickens could be so friendly?

On a walk down the road we discovered a potter's studio. The door was open though no one was home, and we spent the next hour exploring and buying some great pieces of art, on the honor system!

The trip to Max Patch was nearly as breathtaking as the hike itself - along the French Broad River, through my favorite new tiny town, Marshall, through the uber-cute Hot Springs, and up & up a curvy mtn road. Max Patch is a bald mountain with 360-views of the Smokey Mtns. We spotted a few AT Thru Hikers, and ate a delicious picnic.

I could shop til I drop in Asheville! We made sure to hit all the highlights - Tupelo Honey Cafe, Malaprops Bookstore, the Loft, Woolworth Walk, etc.

Fertile ground for environmental education

Teachers Dierdre Watkins (left) and Ella Davis collect critters from Newton County’s Bear Creek as part
of a lesson in investigative learning. Participants in the 2009 Oxford Institute for Environmental Education, the teachers plan to take inquiry-based techniques they’ve learned back to Arabia Mountain High, Georgia’s first LEED-certified public school.

For 10 days this June, the Oxford College biology faculty taught 20 teachers from K–12 schools across Georgia and north Florida the basic principles of ecology, how to apply this knowledge to lesson plans, and how to develop their schoolyards for environmental education.

Now in its 18th year, the workshop has helped over 300 educators become more engaging teachers by experiencing science at the hands-on level. “Many participants have told us this has changed the way they teach,” says Oxford Biology Professor Eloise Carter.
